U

niversity of Indonesia (UI) students have urged campus authorities to set up a crisis center for victims of sexual violence following findings of sexual abuse cases at the prestigious university.

A recent survey conducted by UI Law School students revealed that 22 of 177 survey participants had experienced sexual violence on campus, such as groping or forced sexual activity. Among the perpetrators was a lecturer, a lecturer’s assistant, a cleaning service staffer and fellow students.

At least 45 other participants also claimed that they knew about sexual violence cases that took place at the university.

However, only 11 cases had been reported to campus authorities given the lack of a system for handling sexual violence cases. The university is also said to be lacking proper guidelines and regulations on such issues.

“Such victims are vulnerable to anxiety and depression,” the study's report said, adding that nearly 80 percent of participants had no clue on how and where to report sexual violence. The survey was conducted by through an online questionnaire from Oct. 31 to Nov. 7 last year.

Difa Shafira from the Law School Student Executive Body said the university had to regard sexual violence as a very serious issue and implement progressive measures to stop it. She believed that without drastic measures, sexual violence on campus would only repeat itself.

Difa further said a crisis center to accommodate sexual violence victims was urgently needed, as well as new regulations to provide a deterrent to sexual violence.
