T

he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) named on Tuesday two high-ranking officials at the Mataram Immigration Office and a resort director in West Nusa Tenggara as suspects in a bribery case pertaining to tourist visa misuse.

The head of the Mataram Immigration Office, Kurniadie, and the office's head of intelligence department, Yusriansyah Fazrin, are accused of receiving Rp 1.2 billion (US$83,297) from Wisata Bahagia director Liliana Hidayat for allowing two foreigners working at the company's resort into the country on tourist visas.

The two foreigners, identified only as BGW and MK, were Singaporean and Australian nationals and were reportedly consultants and owners of one of the resorts in the Wyndham Sundancer Lombok complex in Sekotong, West Lombok.

"Our team found new modus [operendi] used by the three suspects during their negotiations, in which Liliana wrote her offers on a piece of paper by using certain codes, all done without talking," KPK commissioner Alexander Marwata told a press briefing in Jakarta on Tuesday evening.

The three suspects were arrested in Mataram and Sekotong during a two-day operation on Monday and Tuesday.

All suspects were taken to the KPK headquarters in Jakarta for questioning on Tuesday.

The Law and Human Rights Ministry's inspector general, Jhoni Ginting, said his office would respect the legal processes conducted by the KPK.

Meanwhile, the two foreigners have returned to their own countries, the KPK said.

"We will report them to their countries' respective antigraft authorities because their countries have regulations that bar bribery of foreign public officials," Alexander said. (ars)
