y June 15, state-owned electricity company PLN had reached just over 10 percent of the goal to generate an additional 35,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity nationwide, a program launched by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

The newly generated 3,617 MW of electricity is being produced by 119 power plants that were mostly developed by independent power producers. (IIPs).

“By the end of this year, there will be an additional supply of 2.2 GW coming from another six power plants, five of which were developed by IIPs,” said Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry electricity director general Rida Mulyana on Tuesday as quoted by tempo.co.

He said 117 other power plants that would produce some 20,120 MW of electricity, 57 percent of the goal, were still under construction.

The projects include hydropower plants, coal-fired power plants, combined cycle power plants and geothermal power plants, the official said, adding that those types of projects needed a longer time to build.

He said PLN and IPPs were now involved in the procurement of projects designed to produce 1,453 MW of electricity, 4 percent of the goal, and were planning other projects that were designed to produce 734 MW of electricity, 2 percent of the goal.

Meanwhile, the remaining 60 projects that were designed to produce 9,516 MW (27 percent of the goal) had obtained purchase and sell agreements, but the projects had not been constructed, pending the fulfillment of certain requirements by the contractors. (bbn)
