T

he Jakarta Council’s plan to hold a plenary meeting to select Jakarta’s next deputy governor on Monday was postponed because councillors have yet to hold a joint leaders meeting to deliberate a code of conduct for the selection process.

“This definitely forces us to postpone the plenary meeting for selecting the deputy governor,” the deputy head of the deputy governor selection committee, Bestari Barus said on Monday as quoted by tempo.co.

He added that they were now waiting for the council’s secretary to set a new date for the plenary meeting.

The deputy governor post has been empty since Sandiaga Uno decided to leave the position to join Gerindra Party chairman Prabowo Subianto as his running mate in this year’s presidential election.

The process of finding someone to replace Sandiaga started in November last year.

The two political parties that supported Governor Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga in the Jakarta gubernatorial election in 2017, Gerindra and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), have nominated two people for the post; the head of the PKS faction in the City Council, Abdurahman Suhaimi, and former Bekasi deputy mayor in West Java, Ahmad Syaikhu.

However, the process has made very little progress. Jakarta councillors have even created two committees, namely a special committee (Pansus) and a selection committee (Panlih).

Pansus is tasked with formulating a code of conduct as the guidelines for Panlih to select the future deputy governor. (vla)
