The Indonesia Great Sale, the country's biggest sales event, will involve 321 shopping centers in 24 provinces.
he Indonesia Great Sale, the first nationwide shopping extravaganza to be held from Aug. 14 to 25, is targeting to tap more than Rp 35 trillion (US$2.4 billion) in consumer transactions, according to Indonesian Retailers Association (Aprindo) chairman Roy Mandey.
He said on Tuesday that the event could increase the daily number of customers at shopping malls by 20 percent to 60,000 from 50,000 on regular days.
The event is organized jointly by Aprindo and the Indonesian Shopping Center Association (APPBI) to celebrate Indonesia's 74th Independence Day. The country's biggest sales event will involve 321 shopping centers in 24 provinces, including Grand Indonesia in Jakarta, Palembang Square Mall in South Sumatra, Ciputra Mall Semarang in Central Java and Beachwalk Shopping Mall in Bali.
“Amid the current trend of online shopping, this event can encourage offline transactions," APPBI chairman Stefanus Ridwan said at a press conference in Jakarta.
The Tourism Ministry's Culinary and Shopping Tourism Acceleration Team head, Vita Datau Messakh, told the conference that the event would hopefully become a "shopaholic magnet" like Singapore Great Sales, Amazing Thailand Sale and Mega Sale in Malaysia.
"The Indonesia Great Sale will attract international tourists as well as domestic buyers because Indonesia, with its popular batik and furniture, has great potential in being a shopping destination," Vita added.
She said that both foreigners and Indonesians, who usually shopped in France, the United States and China, could instead buy domestic and franchised products at the national great sale.
Roy said that shoppers could enjoy discounts of up to 74 percent on food, fashion, sports and other products.
They could also buy merchandises from participating retailers at Rp 17,000 and Rp 45,000 each, figures that represented the date of the Independence Day, Aug. 17, 1945, he said.
The Tangerang City Mall in Banten would host the opening of the Indonesia Great Sale by Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita. (eyc/hen)
