In cooperation with the Indonesian American Society of Academics (IASA) and the Tanoto Foundation, the government has opened two boarding schools with improved facilities and a special curriculum in the country's easternmost province.
The opening ceremonies were conducted on Wednesday at state high school SMA 3 Jayapura and on Thursday at Catholic high school SMA YPPK Adiluhur in Nabire.
National Development Planning Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro, who officially launched the schools, said the boarding system would allow students to be more involved in the learning process, rather than only follow teachers’ orders.
The boarding system also allows students to have more extracurricular activities.
“The teachers will act only as facilitators for the students,” Bambang said at SMA 3 Jayapura on Wednesday.
The students, he added, could also engage in distance learning, or e-learning, because new facilities would enable them to communicate globally.
