Alumni of Diponegoro University will host a national bridge tournament in Jakarta from Nov. 1 to 3.
Indonesian Bridge Association (GABSI) spokesman Bert Toar Polii said the sport had started to receive public recognition as a number of universities —including the University of Indonesia and the Bandung Institute of Technology — had held competitions.
The tournaments are often held by extracurricular organizations on campuses as well as by alumni.
“One of the events that will be hosted by the alumni is the National Bridge Tournament, in which participants will compete to win the 2019 Diponegoro University Chief Alumni Cup from Nov. 1 to 3 at Menara BTN in Jakarta,” said Bert as quoted by tribunnews.com.
The tournament also offers a total of Rp 150 million (US$10,600) in prize money.
Bert added that the university’s alumni were interested in hosting the event after learning the sport would be featured in the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games.
Diponegoro University alumnus Bambang Hartono, one of Indonesia’s richest men, participated in the Asian Games’ bridge competition as the oldest athlete on Team Indonesia.
