nternet and mobile provider Garena Indonesia has vowed to build a stronger support system for local e-sports communities so they can expand, improve and achieve victory in bigger arenas. Garena Indonesia e-sports manager Wijaya Nugroho said Garena was in the middle of discussions with student e-sports communities about starting a league.

“We are now expanding, after establishing the Garena Goes to School program, where we introduced e-sports not just as recreation but as a profession,” Wijaya told a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Wijaya said as the e-sports ecosystem expanded it would have a trickle-down effect that would boost the local creative economy.

E-sports team Dranix was crowd champion of Garena’s Free Fire Indonesia season 2. Dranix also recently won a wild card for the 2020 Presidential Cup and a ticket to the world championship in Brazil.

Dranix general manager Angelina Vivian praised the team for its latest victory and said it was training hard for the world championship.

“We are practicing a lot, honing our skills and preparing ourselves mentally for the big day,” she said.

The daily training schedule, she added, included physical exercise as e-sports athletes required solid stamina. A good physical state, she added, would contribute significantly to their ability to focus while competing.

E-sports is a rapidly emerging sport with a huge number of players locally. According to 2017 data, 44 million people like to play online games, creating a large talent pool for star e-sports athletes to emerge from.
