The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicted there would be a higher intensity of rainfall for the upcoming weeks as the peak of the rainy season will be in February.
pp-based ojek (motorcycle taxi) driver Asep Suhendi decided to go home early on Tuesday as the downpour was showing no sign of stopping at a bus stop where he usually waits for passengers.
He left the bus stop, situated in front of Plaza Senayan shopping mall on Jl. Asia Afrika in Central Jakarta, at around 2 p.m.
Heavy rain that lasted from around 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Tuesday caused severe flooding in some areas of the capital.
On the road where the bus stop was located, the floodwater reportedly reached as high as 40 centimeters and took over 45 minutes to recede.
Social media was flooded with photos and videos showing the inundation on that road, among other locations that had been similarly affected, on Tuesday.
“If it rains heavily for quite a long time, I usually go home before experiencing unwanted consequences like being trapped by floodwater,” Asep told The Jakarta Post at the bus stop on Wednesday.
“Many app-based ojek drivers do the same because passengers would prefer to take cars instead of motorcycles,” he said.
