T

he renovation plan for the main building of the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) in South Jakarta, which was gutted by a fire on Saturday, will follow the guidelines set by the Cultural Heritage Preservation Agency.

AGO spokesperson Hari Setiyono said that, while the AGO building had not been officially classified as a cultural heritage site, it was located in a designated cultural restoration area and was in the process of becoming an official heritage site.

"We'll follow the mechanism prescribed by the Cultural Heritage Preservation Agency. We'll see their experts on this field," he said on Tuesday as reported by tempo.co.

Hari said that, prior to the renovation, experts would examine the building's structure to determine whether it was strong enough for rebuilding.

"Experts will also decide whether the building's original structure will be maintained during the renovation or a new building of the same model constructed," he said.

A fire broke out on the sixth floor of the building on Saturday evening and quickly engulfed the entire structure.

325 firefighters and 65 fire engines had extinguished the flames after 10 hours, at 5:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The office of the assistant attorney general for the intelligence and human resources department sustained most damage from the blaze.

Hari said the funding for the renovation was still being discussed.

"We're still waiting for the investigation results to determine the cause of the fire."

The Jakarta Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are set to question at least 15 witnesses.

A joint team from the National Police’s forensic laboratory and those handling the Indonesia Automatic Fingerprint Identification System was deployed to the location to investigate the cause of the blaze. (nal)
