F

ormer vice president Jusuf Kalla has proposed that the jury of the 2020 Zayed Award for Human Fraternity grant the award to medical experts developing drugs that may be able to treat or prevent COVID-19.

Kalla, who serves as a judge for the awards, said medical experts who were researching ways to stop the COVID-19 outbreak had contributed to humanity and had an international impact.

“The award recipients must show their success in bringing blessings or benefits to aspects of life, and the achievement must have an international impact,” Kalla said in a written statement on Thursday, as quoted by tempo.co.

The Zayed Award for Human Fraternity was established in an agreement between Pope Francis and Grand Imam of Al Azhar Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb, as part of the Abu Dhabi Declaration signed during the Human Fraternity Meeting in February 2019.

The declaration, known as the Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together, seeks to foster stronger human solidarity and promote coexistence between religious communities to fight extremism.

In addition to Kalla, the Zayed Award jury includes former Central African Republic president Catherine Samba-Panza; former United Nations special adviser on genocide prevention Adama Dieng; prefect of the Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signatura, Cardinal Dominique Mamberti; Canada’s 27th governor-general, Michaelle Jean; and secretary-general of the High Committee for Human Fraternity, Mohamed Mahmoud Abdulsalam.

The members of the jury, including Kalla, are set to meet Pope Francis in his private room at the Holy See on Friday to discuss views on tolerance, humanity and brotherhood to be used as criteria to evaluate the nominees for the award. (syk)
