36 feared dead after train derails in Taiwan

n express train derailed in a tunnel in Hualien County in eastern Taiwan on Friday, leaving many people feared dead, local media reported.

The express train derailed in a tunnel in Hualien County in eastern Taiwan on Friday, leaving 36 people without signs of life and over 60 others injured, police said.

About 70 people were still trapped inside the partially derailed train, the police added. Firefighters and others are at the scene.

The eight-car train had about 350 passengers on board, with its fourth and fifth cars severely damaged, media reported, showing footage of passengers escaping from the train.

President Tsai Ing-wen instructed relevant government agencies including the transport ministry to do their utmost in rescue efforts, according to her spokesperson.

Friday marked the first day of a four-day holiday period dedicated to offering prayers to ancestors.
