The government recorded a rolling seven-day average of 5,067 new cases per day on May 23, about a week after Idul Fitri. By Friday, the figure had risen to 7,201.

The Health Ministry recorded 8,083 new confirmed cases on Friday, bringing the cumulative tally to 1.89 million cases, with around 52,000 deaths and 1.73 million recoveries.

Six cities and regencies in Java have reported that their healthcare systems have been overwhelmed by the case surge: Bandung and Cimahi in West Java, as well as Semarang, Kudus, Jepara and Demak in Central Java.

Cases have more than doubled in the regions, and the COVID-19 hospital bed occupancy rate has reached at least 70 percent across the board, the national COVID-19 task force has reported.
