ome nonessential businesses are reportedly ignoring government orders to have staff work from home while Java and Bali are placed under stricter pandemic rules in response to soaring coronavirus cases and deaths.

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said earlier this week that he had found some nonessential businesses still working from their offices, as well as some essential businesses violating the 50 percent cap on office occupancy.

“We immediately closed the offices of firms that were not complying and [ordered] all employees to work from home, and the owners or managers of the offices were [reported to] the police for legal processing,” Anies wrote on his Instagram account on Tuesday.

The statement followed a field inspection carried out by the governor a few days into emergency curbs in the capital. The government has tightened mobility restrictions for the period of July 3 to 20, subject to possible extension, to prevent a further increase in the daily number of COVID-19 cases and deaths, which reached 38,124 and 871, respectively, on Friday as the Delta variant spread more rapidly nationwide.

Anies also ordered the closure of offices belonging to life insurance company PT Equity Life and property agent Ray White on Tuesday. Both are located at the Sahid Sudirman Center building in the central business district (CBD).

Anies went on to say that workers could report their employers for violating the restrictions.

The Association of Indonesian Life Insurers (AAJI), which comprises 60 life insurance companies and five reinsurance companies, said on Thursday that it fully supported the government’s emergency policy.
