Fresh off taking over the Group of G20 (G20) presidency from Italy a day prior, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo arrived in Glasgow, Scotland, on Monday for the United Climate Change Conference (COP26) with a plan to use Indonesia's leadership to craft global climate policies.

The President flew to Glasgow, Scotland, on Sunday evening after symbolically receiving the G20 presidency from Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi. Indonesia begins its year-long leadership role in December.

Jokowi promised “inclusive, people-centered, environmentally friendly and sustainable growth” as Indonesia’s main commitment to its leadership in the G20. He said the G20 should be the engine for developing an ecosystem that drives collaboration and innovation.

"This is something that we must  [discuss] deeper at our future meetings. I'd like to invite you [G20 leaders] to attend and continue this discussion at the G20 Summit in Indonesia," Jokowi said, hoping that having Bali as the venue next year could inspire innovative ideas.

Climate issues will be one of the key tests of Indonesia’s G20 leadership, with the latest communique being widely considered disappointing with a lack of real commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi said there was an extensive debate among G20 nations when discussing the carbon emission reduction target and setting a time frame for net-zero emissions.
