erempuan Pelestari Budaya Indonesia (Indonesian Women for Cultural Preservation/PPBI) has held a virtual fashion show featuring Alorese woven fabric to raise funds for underprivileged children in Alor regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
The woven fabrics, boasting tribal motifs with natural colorings, were presented by women from all walks of life who paired them with everyday fashion items including white shirts and white sneakers.
“These woven fabrics are precious and we don’t have the heart to cut and sew them, so we just match them with what we have in our wardrobe,” Diah Kusumawardani Wijayanti, chairperson of the PPBI and founder of the Yayasan Belantara Budaya foundation, said at the opening of the fashion show, which was live-streamed from fX Sudirman on Saturday.
Diah said afterwards that all the woven fabrics presented at the show had already been sold.
The sales have empowered the weavers in Alor, and part of the sale proceeds will be donated to support education and help provide nutritious food for students of SDN Padang Panjang state elementary school in Alor regency.
For this charity event, PPBI joined hands with the Yayasan Tanitenun Indonesia foundation, which provides mentoring in organic farming and the preservation of NTT woven fabrics; Lafaina Artisangoods, a marketplace for woven fabrics products; and fX Sudirman.
