President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has left the door open for a Cabinet reshuffle, fueling rumors that ministers from the pro-government NasDem Party – which has thrown its weight behind opposition figurehead Anies Baswedan – will be on the chopping block, an idea that the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has supported.
The recent reshuffle saw President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s list of deputy ministers expanded – a move experts said was done to accommodate his own political interests by giving the seats to his loyalists, as he enters the twilight of his second term in office.
President Jokowi inaugurated Zulkifli Hasan and Hadi Tjahjanto as the new trade minister and agrarian reform minister respectively on Wednesday, knowing that their entry into the Cabinet would further consolidate his power and keep him from being a lame duck president.
