The surge in Indonesians seeking repatriation from Cambodia following a crackdown on online scam centers has drawn national scrutiny over its scale, with many pointing to structural weaknesses in employment and economic security that lure vulnerable Indonesians into such work.
Scammers working from hubs across Southeast Asia, some willingly and others trafficked, lure internet users around the world into fake romances and cryptocurrency investments, netting tens of billions of dollars each year.
The Cambodian Ministry of Interior reported that 5,192 displaced persons returned home during the latest reporting period, but large populations remain in temporary shelters or host communities, particularly in Banteay Meanchey, Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear provinces.
China supports ASEAN's mediation efforts and is willing to once again create conditions and provide a platform for dialogue and negotiations between the two sides, the Chinese foreign ministry said on Tuesday.
