View all search resultsIndonesia and Australia are moving toward clinching a new, stronger defense treaty that could potentially affect the Indo-Pacific security landscape, particularly in the South China Sea, where tension has been building in recent years due to overlapping territorial claims between China and several Southeast Asian countries.
Indonesia and Australia’s joint efforts at sea would target “a full range of maritime threats”, including “those against sovereignty”, human and drug trafficking and environmental crimes, both countries’ ministers said after the 2+2 meeting in Canberra.
From Netflix to unicorn start-ups, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has called in a speech for greater unity among Australia and Indonesia’s younger generations, especially as the latter nation looks forward to a demographic bonus.
The letters include the names and locations of 57 political prisoners charged with treason, held behind bars in seven cities across Indonesia. They also include a list of the names and ages of 243 civilians who have died since Dember 2018 in the Nduga military operation.
Jokowi said he wanted to understand what it took to develop a capital city such as Canberra as his government went ahead with a plan to relocate the nation’s capital from Jakarta to East Kalimantan.
By giving the speech, Jokowi would be the second Indonesian president to address Australia's parliament, following in the footsteps of former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who delivered a speech in front of Australian lawmakers in 2010.
