The collapse of an Islamic boarding school in Sidoarjo, East Java, which killed several people and left dozens missing has cast a harsh spotlight on Indonesia’s weak construction safety standards and the shortcomings of local administrations in monitoring urban development.

At least 20 regencies and cities across the country have imposed online learning in the coming days, including Banda Aceh, Pekanbaru, Palembang, Bandar Lampung, Bogor, Bekasi, Jakarta, Tangerang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Kediri and Makassar.
