View all search resultsNajib was sentenced in July 2020 to 12 years' jail for corruption and money laundering in a case linked to a multibillion-dollar scandal at now-defunct state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). He has denied wrongdoing and is out on bail pending an appeal.
Najib's graft-tainted party, the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), clinched the premiership last month after it was ousted from power three years ago over a multi-billion dollar scandal. Opponents had expressed fears that party leaders facing criminal charges could secure leniency once back in control.
"Following significant and successful settlements with Goldman Sachs, AmBank Group and Deloitte, the government's recovery efforts are now focused on pursuing other wrongdoers who have caused losses to 1MDB and/or SRC during the execution of their duties, as parties directly or indirectly involved in 1MDB and/or SRC's various operations and transactions," Finance Minister Zafrul Abdul Aziz said in a statement.
These are the third changes to the East Coast Rail Link that was one of the showpiece infrastructure projects under China's Belt and Road Initiative and was launched in 2016 during former Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's administration.
"This marks another success in the Malaysian government's continuing recovery efforts against parties involved in 1MDB, SRC and its related entities. The Malaysian government is determined to ensure that appropriate actions are taken against all individuals or entities involved, directly or indirectly in the global 1MDB scheme," Finance Minister Zafrul Abdul Aziz was quoted as saying in the statement.
