The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 953.15 points, or 3.29 percent, from Friday at 28,010.93, its lowest closing since May 17. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 47.11 points, or 2.42 percent, lower at 1,899.45.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 909.75 points, or 3.08 percent, from Monday at 28,608.59. The index closed at the lowest since April 21 with the largest point drop since Feb. 26. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 46.35 points, or 2.37 percent, lower at 1,905.92.
A strong reading on US and European manufacturing and services activity provided a positive catalyst for investors, who appear to have got over Joe Biden's plan to almost double capital gains tax, while Washington's decision to reapprove Johnson & Johnson's vaccine also lifted optimism.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 110.68 points, or 0.37 percent, from Wednesday to 29,620.11. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 15.81 points, or 0.80 percent, at 1,951.62.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 324.36 points, or 1.14 percent at 28,729.88 from Wednesday when it finished at the lowest since Feb. 4. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange closed 26.97 points, or 1.40 percent, higher at 1,955.55.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average sank 722.10 points, or 2.39 percent, from Thursday to 29,446.17. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 37.05 points, or 1.92 percent, at 1,889.18.
