View all search resultsA humble stage with a small red room built above it is a striking sight at Pasar Gede in Surakarta, Central Java. Set in front of the Tien Kok Sie Temple that is situated beside the market, the stage was prepared for the showcasing of wayang potehi (Chinese wooden puppets).
The curtain is raised. A puppet called Teu comes out and introduces himself: “I was born from the heavens/Gone into exile for picking fairy’s peaches/As the world is complicated and treacherous/I’m wandering to see to troubles.”
