View all search resultsThe history of Senen market began when a Dutch entrepreneur, named Justinus Vinck, developed the market to the east of old Batavia in 1733. The market turned into a slum area after Indonesia’s independence in 1945, and reportedly experienced a steep rise in crime rates.
Central Jakarta’s legendary Senen Market, famous since the Dutch colonial era, has been razed multiple times. According to records compiled by news agency Antara, Senen Market first went up in flames in 1974. Since then, the large market has caught fire nine times.
While retailers in the capital are involved in a war of discounts during the Jakarta Great Sale that runs from June 3 to July 17, some Jakarta residents opt for cheaper secondhand clothes sold at several places throughout the capital.
