View all search resultsAround 100 refugees staying at an empty building formerly occupied by the West Jakarta Military Command (Kodim) face further uncertainty as the Jakarta administration has reportedly issued an eviction notice stating that the government is planning to renovate and utilize the facility.
Based on patterns from previous cases, the refugees might have left their shelters for several reasons, including to reunite with their families in neighboring countries, said UNHCR spokesperson Mitra Salima Suryono.
North Sumatra’s Deli Serdang administration has said the local social affairs agency, in cooperation with the central Immigration Office, will try to find a place that can temporarily accommodate the 157 Rohingyas who landed on Dec. 30, 2023 in Karang Gading village, with a local police force saying it would also contribute to the effort.
