View all search resultsA House of Representatives committee is seeking an explanation from Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama and Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Tito Karnavian about the eviction of residents and workers from Kalijodo red-light district in West and North Jakarta.
As many as 279 Kalijodo households have been relocated from the former red-light district to two separate low-cost apartment complexes in Jakarta, prepared by the Jakarta city administration just days prior to knocking down all of their houses.
Once a pleasure center for the middle and lower-classes with cafés serving beer women, the infamous red-light district of Kalijodo in North Jakarta has now turned to ruins as the city administration officially closed it down on Monday.
The police and military should not be supporting Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama's plan to demolish the Kalijodo red-light district in West Jakarta, as such a role is not part of their job descriptions, a human rights activist says.
