View all search resultsThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the quake struck at 1:06 a.m. Its epicenter was located in the sea south of Java, 89 kilometers southeast of Pacitan regency in East Java, at a depth of 58 kilometers.
BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center head Daryono raised concerns about the potential for massive earthquakes along the Sunda Strait and Mentawai-Siberut megathrust zones, following the powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake that hit Japan’s southwest on Aug. 8, injuring at least 15 people.
While no aftershocks were forecast after the main earthquake on Saturday night, authorities warned people to check on building conditions before returning to their homes, and to stay alert for landslides and flash floods that could be triggered by heavy rain in some parts of the quake-affected area.
Lebak, Banten, was rocked by its third earthquake of the year on July 7. Even though it was smaller than the ones that occurred on Jan. 23 (6.1-magnitude) and in March (5.2-magnitude), the 4.4-magnitude earthquake damaged three houses in Sukabumi, West Java.
