t least 40 people were injured after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake shook the southern coast of Java Island in the early hours of Friday.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the quake struck at 1:06 a.m. Its epicenter was located in the sea south of Java, 89 kilometers southeast of Pacitan regency in East Java, at a depth of 58 kilometers.
The earthquake was felt most strongly in Pacitan, as well as in Bantul and Sleman in Yogyakarta. Lighter tremors were reported as far away as Tuban and Jepara on Java’s northern coast. BMKG also noted that shaking was felt in Denpasar, on Bali Island.
No tsunami threat was detected.

BMKG’s Earthquakes and Tsunamis Director Daryono said the earthquake was caused by a thrust fault mechanism, in which one block of the Earth’s crust is forced upward over another along a fault line.
This type of movement is typical of the Java megathrust subduction zone and can generate powerful earthquakes that may trigger tsunamis if they occur beneath the sea.
