The warning comes following a flash flood early on Sunday morning that swept away nearly an entire sub-district, leaving 16 people dead and three others missing as of Monday afternoon.
Three out of five provinces in Kalimantan have been hit by floods, triggered by deforestation and changing climate, over the past month, adding into the latest list of natural disasters that have struck the region this year.
Public compliance with the existing COVID-19 protocols is said to remain an integral part of evacuation and mitigation efforts following a string of fatal disasters that struck several regions across the archipelago over the last two weeks.
BMKG head Dwikorita Karnawati said cultural competence with regard to crisis response, especially among residents and administrators in tsunami-prone areas, was a critical component in easing the impact of natural disasters in the future.
