View all search resultsIn light of the heated-up election climate sparked by Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama’s statement about a Quranic verse, a political researcher has demanded that Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the largest Islamic organization in the country, cool down the situation in the capital city prior to the upcoming the election.
Political analyst from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) Siti Zuhro suggested that Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama stop commenting on matters outside of his area of knowledge following protests from several hard-line groups who accuse him of religious defamation.
Indonesian Ulema Council’s (MUI) Jakarta chapter general secretary Zulfa Mustofa has said legal processes will continue although Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama has offered an apology related to his statement about a verse from the Quran on Sept. 27 in Thousand Island regency.
The National Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) will follow up a report that Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama committed religious defamation, Bareskrim chief Insp. Gen. Ari Dono Sukmanto confirmed on Friday.
