In fact, the hot weather is a blessing for her and the tobacco she harvests. With skillful hands, Sudarti arranges and ensures her tobacco is evenly spread out to dry quickly.
The agricultural land in Rembang regency, Central Java, looks lush with stretches of tobacco ready for harvest. As the harvest season approaches, tobacco farmers are busy preparing. Among them is Ansori, a tobacco farmer from Gunem village. That morning, he and over a dozen farm laborers working for him were visibly bustling.
The synthetic substances - which have a chemical structure similar to that of nicotine - are not subject to US tobacco and vaping regulations that are designed to control traditional nicotine, a highly addictive drug.
The report, published on Jan. 16, found that 38.5 percent of Indonesians over the age of 14 used tobacco products in 2022. This was up more than 2 percentage points from the country’s 2020 figure and up 5 percentage points from 2015.
