hose planning to visit the island of Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara should consider arranging their trip on Sept. 16-19 as the annual Senggigi Festival at Senggigi Beach, Batu Layar district, is slated to return with even more festivity.
Held to promote tourism in the region, the event is set to feature various activities in arts and culture, education as well as local crafts like tenun (woven fabrics) and carvings. "Visitors can also expect to enjoy ogoh-ogoh effigies parade, malean sampi (traditional cattle ceremony), gendang beleq traditional music performances and peresean attractions," said the Tourism Ministry's deputy assistant for archipelago tourism promotion development, Raseno Arya, as quoted by tempo.co on Tuesday.

West Lombok Regent Fauzan Khalid said the festival would also attempt to break a new record at the Indonesian Museum of Records (MURI) for playing gendang beleq in 100 sampans. "We are hosting an international marathon event," he added.
Home to 193 kilometers of coastline, Lombok has plenty of tourism potential. Most of the picturesque beaches can be found in the southern part of the island. "Senggigi is nothing compared to the beaches in the south," said Fauzan, adding that among the recommended spots were Mekaki Bay in Sekotong, 23 Gilis including Gili Tangkong, Gili Nanggu, Gili Sudak, Gili Kedis and Gili Laya, Sesaot Dam, Narmada Park and a surfing arena in Bangko-bangko.
