History buffs or those seeking to educate themselves while traveling in East Java might consider visiting this unique museum.

At Trinil Museum, situated at the banks of Bengawan Solo river, Ngawi regency, is the Pithecanthropus erectus, popularly known as Java Man, and other artifacts from early human’s period.

As reported by Antara news agency, the museum features 1,200 fossils, which are divided into 130 types. Among the collection are fossil replicas of the Pithecanthropus erectus, a pre-human Australopithecus africanus from Africa, an archaic human Homo neanderthalensis from Germany, a tiger's lower jawbone (Felis tigris) and a bull’s horn fossil (Bibos palaeosondaicus).

The museum is complete with comprehensive information that allows both visitors and paleontologists to learn about the ecosystem, plants and wildlife from early human's period.

Trinil is recognized as a paleoanthropological site as it is the area where paleontologists discovered fossils from the Pliocene era, which was around 1.5 million years ago, and the Pleistocene epoch that ended around 10,000 years BC.

The site was officially opened in 1991. At first, the area was only a mark to commemorate Eugene Dubois' discovery of the Pithecanthropus erectus fossil at the site.

Trinil Museum opens from Tuesday to Sunday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. The entrance fee costs only Rp 1,000 (US$0.07) for children and students and Rp 3,000 for adults. (kes)
