ember has one more thing to be excited about in August apart from the Jember Fashion Carnival (JFC) 2017 slated for Aug. 9 to 13 as the Tourism Ministry has announced that the East Java regency will be crowned as Carnival City prior to the annual event.

“Jember Fashion Carnival has been inspiring other local carnivals for 16 years,” said Tourism Minister Arief Yahyy, adding that the ministry would publish an official decree on the new title.

Arief says the carnival has indirectly improved MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) tourism in Jember. “In terms of aviation, Jember Airport has become a successful ‘go-between’ airport. It currently also hosts around 35 new hotels."

He added that Jember needed to improve its other destinations. "August is always a busy month, but then it returns to normal after the carnival. It needs to offer other tourism packages,” Arief explained.

JFC president Dynand Fariz expressed his appreciation of the minister’s idea of making Jember the Carnival City, which will make it more creative and excited about competing in the international league.

“That’s why [JFC 2017], which is entering its 16th year, will be themed ‘Victory’ because the carnival has earned a lot of international awards throughout its operation,” said Dynand.

Some of the awards received by JFC so far are Best National Costume at Miss Tourism International 2016 in Malaysia, Best National Costume at Miss Grand International 2016 in Las Vegas, in the United States, and Best National Costume at Miss Supranational 2015 in Warsaw, Poland. (kes)
