he Indonesian Golf Course Owners Association (APLGI) has praised the Tourism Ministry’s effort in promoting golf courses in Indonesia to overseas countries.

APLGI has called on all 62 of its member golf courses to obtain certification as the government has implemented a certification program to all tourism businesses including golf courses.

So far five courses have passed the certification assessment, namely Cengkareng Golf Club in Banten, Royal Sumatra Golf in North Sumatra, Permata Sentul Golf in West Java, Lotus Lakes Golf Club in West Java and Golf Graha Famili in East Java.

Merry Kwan of PT. Visi Prima Golf said her team had come up with three priority requirements for Indonesia to catch up with Thailand in terms of golf tourism.

“The first is direct flights and air connectivity. Second, we need to quickly hold a huge-scale Golf Travel Mart that involves buyers from all over the world. The third is our country’s brand awareness through international golf tournaments,” explained Merry.

“The spending on golf tourism is quite high; one trip can cost around US$3,500,” she added. (kes)
