n underwater photography contest is being held during the Biak Munara Wampasi (BMW) Cultural Festival 2017 that runs from July 1-4 in Biak, Papua.
“The contest specifically targets photos that can sell Biak tourism. This competition was initiated by the Biak regency administration and we‘re grateful that many people are participating,” said Bambang Wijanarko, one of the judges from the Tourism Ministry.
Fifty photographers have reportedly signed up for the competition.

“We’re going to pick the first, second and third place winners and 30 nominees. The winning photos will be used as promotional and publication tools for Biak and the Tourism Ministry,” said Illias Irawan of the Papua chapter of the Indonesian Photography Profession Association (APFI).
“The judging will take place on July 4, the last day of the BMW 2017," he said.
Apart from the photography contest, the festival also offers a variety of events and activities, including snap mor (spearfishing), an attraction displaying 1,000 tifa (traditional Papuan musical instruments), a parade featuring the wor and pancar Biak traditional dances and the apen byaren (walking on hot stones) ritual ceremony.
