ocal rock bands Jamrud and Cokelat are set to return at this year’s Wonderful Indonesia Crossborder event that will be held in Atambua, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), on Aug. 27 at the Simpang Lima Field.

They previously performed at the event last year.

“This event aims to support President [Joko] Jokowi [Widodo]’s Nawacita [nine goals] and attract foreign tourists from Timor Leste as well as improving tourism activities around the crossborder area,” said Tourism Ministry's Archipelago Marketing Development deputy Esthy Reko Astuti.

The event is part of the Atambua Crossborder Festival that has been consistently held by the ministry.

“This is the closest area to Timor Leste as there’s Mota’ain border gate that connects Indonesia with Timor Leste; so it’s very possible to bring in foreign tourists,” added Esthy.

Esthy also said that Jamrud and Cokelat were chosen to perform because both have strong and solid fan bases. During their performances at last year’s event, they attracted around 25,000 visitors.

“Music is universal and both Jamrud and Cokelat have huge fan bases in Atambua and Timor Leste. A universal language is needed to bring people together and music is one of the them. Even during a national-scale launching event, the ministry always invite a music performer such as Purwacaraka as music is very powerful,” said Tourism Minister Arief Yahya.

Previously, Atambua invited Rising Star Indonesia winner Andmesh Kamaleng and Mahadewi to entertain the locals and visitors from Timor Leste in late June. (kes)
