oba Samosir and Asahan Regencies, North Sumatra is set to host a water sports competition called Toba Kaldera Asahan River 2017 on Nov. 29 – Dec.9.

“This international championship is the program from North Sumatra Province together with Tobasa and Asahan Regencies,” said Tobasa tourism department head Ultrison Simangunsong.

A total of 17 teams are to compete in this rafting competition that will be held at Asahan River.

The water of Asahan River comes from Lake Toba, this 22-kilometer river has the volumetric flow rate of 120 cubic meters per second with the average depth of five meters.

“The international rafters claim Asahan River as the third best river after Zambesi River in Africa and Colorado River in the United States,” Ultrison added. Asahan is a difficult river to tackle, that’s why participants must be class 4 – 5 kayakers.

For accommodation, visitors and participants can stay at Taman Simalem Resort or other more affordable lodgings.

Several attractions located close to Asahan River are Dolok Surungan Wildlife Refuge and 30-meter Harimau Waterfall in Parhitean Village. Parhitean Village is the home of Parmalim community, this palace also has rumah panggung (wooden-stilt houses) with no room in it.
