T

hose visiting the oh-so-popular Kuta Beach in Bali may find several delman (horse-drawn buggies) coachmen offering their services to domestic and foreign tourists to explore the area.

Badung regency administration has set up a special route for the service so that it won't disrupt the traffic in the congested area.

"We provide this form of transportation as a tourist attraction for vacationers from inside and outside the country," one of the coachmen, Bagus, told Antara at the beach on Tuesday.

Bagus said around three to five delman operate in the area every day, passing through the special route that starts from the Hard Rock Cafe and then turning around to Jl. Legian, also known as Ground Zero, and then returning to the first location at Jl. Pantai Kuta.

The eco-friendly form of transportation can accommodate up to four passengers, said another coachman, 50-year-old Saleh.

The price of the ride will depend on the distance traveled. Saleh said the service usually costs Rp 100,000 (US$7) to Rp 200,000, but is negotiable as long as the journey is still around the Kuta and Legian areas.

Coachman Rian, said he could earn around Rp 300,000 after working at the beach from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. However there are times when no one is interested to hop onto the buggies despite the location being full of tourists every day.

But life goes on, said Rian, as he patiently waits for tourists who long to explore Bali in a different way. (kes)
