The closure will start at midnight on March 24 and continue until 5 a.m. on March 26.
opular tourist destination Mount Bromo in East Java will be closed for more than 24 hours on March 25 to observe Nyepi (Hindu Day of Silence), an official has said.
The closure will start at midnight on March 24 and continue until 5 a.m. on March 26, Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) management head John Kennedie said on Tuesday.
“Considering the letter from the Probolinggo chapter of [Hindu organization] Parisada Hindu Dharma Indonesia regarding Nyepi, we’ve decided to close Bromo’s tourist area from March 25 to March 26,” John said as quoted by kompas.com.
Nyepi is a holy day that marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year according to the Saka calendar.
Hindus mark the day by amati geni (abstaining from lighting fires), amati karya (abstaining from work), amati lelungan (abstaining from venturing outside the family compound) and amati lelanguan (abstaining from enjoying entertainment).
Tourists will not be able to enter Mount Bromo from all routes, including through Wonokerto village in Sukapura district, Wonokitri village in Tosari district and Jemplang area in Lumajang regency. All routes will be reopened on March 26 at 5:01 a.m. (mpr)
