Japan’s International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is assessing a railway development project in the new capital city.
he Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is currently reviewing a railway development initiative in the Nusantara Capital City (IKN).
“We’re examining railway construction, both from Balikpapan and within the IKN area,” Public Works and Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said in Tokyo on Friday.
Basuki was in Tokyo to receive The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star from the Japanese government on Wednesday.
Basuki and Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi met with JICA president Akihito Tanaka in Jakarta two weeks ago to discuss the matter.
Between 2025 and 2029, the government plans to start construction of four railway projects. These include airport trains, urban trains within the Government Center Core Area (KIPP), urban trains on Kalimantan Island and intercity trains.
The urban railway from Balikpapan to KIPP spans 143.33 kilometers with an 88-minute travel time. The breakdown includes 125.73 km at ground level, 14.6 km of elevated track and 3 km of underground track. It is planned to carry up to 4.5 million passengers by 2040.
The government is preparing two options for the airport railway, connecting the Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan International Airport in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, with KIPP.
