akarta and Hanoi have vowed to strengthen their cooperation in trade and security, including in the South China Sea, following President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s state visit to Vietnam on Friday.

President Jokowi, whose itinerary this week includes visits to three ASEAN countries, welcomed a handful of new cooperation deals on fisheries and agriculture at a meeting on Friday with his Vietnamese counterpart, Vo Van Thuong.

Jokowi also received an investment commitment from Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer VinFast.

This year marks the 69th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries as well as the 11th anniversary of the Indonesia-Vietnam strategic partnership.

In a joint statement after their meeting on Friday, Jokowi and Thuong said they had set a new bilateral trade target of US$15 billion in the coming years, noting that the “political trust” between the two countries had only increased in recent years.

“With much joy, we have seen the strengthening of our strategic partnership relationship,” Thuong said. “Security and trade cooperation have also become the bright spots in our relationship.”

Continuing, Jokowi announced that the two countries had signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) on fisheries and information technology.
