tate-owned Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) has held a talk show with the title “Bring Up, Embracing e-Commerce Booming”. Taking place at Hotel Fairmont, Jakarta, on June 16, the event discussed the utilization of e-commerce, to help people in conducting digital transactions.

Speaking at the event were director of BRI, Sis Apik Wijayanto; director of e-business from the Communications and Information Ministry, Azhar Hasyim; Handi Irawan of Frontier Consulting Group; CEO of OLX Indonesia, Daniel Tumiwa; and co-founder and managing director of PT Global Tiket Network (tiket.com), Mikhael Gaery Undarsa.

Besides the talk show, the event also saw the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between BRI and several online merchants. The series of events concluded with iftar (breaking the fast) and a press conference.

E-commerce is expected to continue to gain ground due to the advantages it offers. Those involved in this business cite practicality, ease and speed as the winning factors that make e-commerce interesting. Nevertheless, the business is not without risks, one of which is the security of the payment system, because in e-commerce, quite often the merchant and the customers do not know one another.

At the talk show, BRI introduced the latest solution related to its e-commerce payment system. Known as a secure, easy-to-use product, e-Pay BRI currently boasts more than 100 online merchants of various types of business distributed across the country. Those customers integrated with BRI Internet Banking automatically can use e-pay BRI. Not only that, e-Pay BRI also offers the T-bank electronic money payment source: The facility can be used by those who don’t have an account with BRI. This way, transactions are secure using paycode that is directly sent to the customer’s mobile phone.

Since 2012, BRI has developed e-Pay as its e-commerce product. Seen from different criteria, e-Pay BRI continues to show a positive trend. As of April 2016, e-Pay BRI transactions recorded an increase of 309 percent year-on-year. At the same time there has been an average increase of 20 percent each year in the number of merchants.

Aside from e-Pay BRI, the bank also features a credit card product that is incorporated into the e-commerce payment system. To note, BRI has been developing various credit card products this year; these are the standard card, gold card, platinum card, visa touch and visa infinite cards, corporate card, business card and co-branding card. At present, the number of BRI credit cardholders is recorded at 1.23 million people, with average transactions of Rp397 billion per month.

BRI credit cards also boast the Visa 3D Secure feature, text message notification for each transaction, interesting promotion programs, and free annual fee for life – all of which are benefits that can further entice people into using the card for e-commerce.

More specifically related to e-commerce transactions, BRI credit cards is currently cooperating with more than 50 merchants either for regular programs, such as 0 percent interest installment, with tenor up to 24 months, or for tactical programs related to specific moments or events. The e-commerce merchants partnering with BRI are in various markets, either segmented or general.

On average e-commerce merchants conduct 2,868 transactions with average sales volume of Rp10.5 billion. Besides promotional programs, the partnership between BRI and e-commerce merchants also covers a payment gateway service. Currently e-commerce merchants that already have the BRI payment gateway service are McDelivery.co.id, Tokopedia, and others.

Going forward, with excellent standards of service and with the support of BRIsat, which the company is sending into orbit this year, BRI is optimistic that it will become the biggest national payment gateway in e-commerce.
