Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) Sinar Mas recently won a Sustainable Business Award (SBA) in the category of Best Energy Management.
The award was handed over directly by National Development Planning Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro at the Grand Hyatt Jakarta. During the awards ceremony, the minister said the company had fulfilled the standards of sustainable business practices thanks to its use of sustainable energy resources.
"We welcome this award and are grateful for it. The appreciation and external evaluation we have received is part of our Sustainability Roadmap Vision 2020 target that aims at economic growth while still prioritizing sustainable business practices," said Elim Sritaba, APP Sinar Mas' director of sustainability.
APP Sinar Mas has also won similar awards in previous years. It won an SBA in the category of Strategy and Sustainability last year. The company's two industry units, Pindo Deli Pulp & Paper Mills and Indah Kiat Pulp & Paper, both won SBAs in 2013 for Water Management.
The SBAs are the result of the partnership between PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Indonesia, the Indonesia Chamber of Commerce and the Indonesia Business Council for Sustainable Development, and are designed to increase awareness of sustainability and demonstrate how it can still benefit businesses, while also being good for the environment and for stakeholders in both the present and the future. The SBA's advisory panel consists of leading sustainability experts in Indonesia.
APP Sinar Mas' efforts to manage sustainable energy involve increasing the efficiency of its energy per unit in the product, moving to the use of alternative fuels and educating all of its employees on how to save energy.
Each of the industry units at APP Sinar Mas has its own way of implementing sustainability. At Pindo Deli Karawang, for instance, the company has worked together with the IDH Sustainable Trade Initiative to adopt a Clean Manufacturing Program in its entire production process. This program stresses the use of increased energy efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
Meanwhile, at industry units like Indah Kiat and Twiji Kimia, there are special teams dedicated to the issue of energy efficiency that are tasked with identifying what parts of the company have potential for improved energy efficiency usage. These two units are internationally certified with International Standardization Organization (ISO) 50001.
