The Religious Affairs Ministry says it is developing a system to monitor travel agencies that organize haj and umrah (minor haj) tours to assure the agencies operate in line with prevailing regulations.

Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin said such a monitoring system was needed to assure the agencies fulfilled their obligations to customers.

"We are developing Si Patuh, a haj and umrah integrated online monitoring system," said Lukman at the State Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Under the system, all travel agencies organizing haj and umrah tours are required to state all promised facilities to their customers, including the name of all hotels and flight numbers, the minister added.

The development of the monitoring system is being carried out following numerous complaints lodged against travel agencies by customers.

Early last year, the police investigated a fraud case involving Rp 848.7 billion (US$59.41 million) collected from nearly 60,000 people through First Travel.

Lukman expressed the hope that with the system, his ministry could optimally monitor the activities of travel agencies organizing pilgrimages as the conventional monitoring system was no longer reliable.

“The system is still being developed. But I hope we can implement it soon," he added. (bbn)
