mid the refugee crisis in Europe, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney has revealed that her own family sought refuge in England in the early 1980s.
Amal shared her family’s story while sitting down with Syrian refugee families living in Berlin, Germany. During the meeting, she was accompanied by her husband, actor George Clooney. The couple partnered with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to raise awareness on the refugee crisis.
The Lebanon-born Amal, who was only 3 years old when her parents decided to move the family to England during the Lebanese civil war, shared her story in a video published by the IRC.
"My own family is from Lebanon and they also ran away from a war and were lucky enough to be expected by a European country in 1982 when the violence there was really bad," she told the refugees as they took turns sharing their experience.
According to IRC data, half a million Syrians have fled to Europe for safety, with seven out of 10 in need of aid being women and children, in the span of five years of the Syrian crisis. (kes)
