Avatar fans, brace yourself for another four sequels of the fantasy adventure set in the Pandora universe.

On the final day of CinemaCon in Las Vegas, director James Cameron announced that he would be making four sequels of to Avatar, slated to be released in 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2023. He told Variety that his vision for the follow-ups had actually expanded over time, as he first envisioned only two sequels. But after a meeting with screenwriters, artists and designers, he realized that he had way too much material for just two films.

“We have decided to embark on a truly massive cinematic project, making four epic films, each of which stands alone but together forms a complete saga,” he said.

In the 2009 Avatar film, the audience was introduced to the lush alien planet of Pandora, inhabited by the seemingly primitive yet highly evolved beings, the Na'vi. Since humans have depleted Earth's natural resources, they are mining for valuable minerals on Pandora, the atmosphere of which is poisonous to humans. In order to explore Pandora's biosphere, humans use Na'vi-human hybrids called "avatars", operated by genetically matching humans. The film follows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), an avatar operator who falls in love with a female Na'vi called Neytiri, a situation that later changes everything that's been going on in Pandora.

In addition to receiving rave reviews and Academy Awards including for Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography, it also recorded a commercial success grossing over US$2.7 billion worldwide. (kes)
