'Housefull 3' attempts to step into new-age Bollywood

Housefull 3 also attempts to talk about issues with India’s heavy reliance on undependable astrologers, sex before marriage, rape, Westernization, human trafficking and assault.

Housefull 3 offers refreshing changes in merging elements of typical Bollywood cinema and a more open-minded era.

Directed by Farhad and Sajid, the third installment of the Housefull series returns packed with ample satire, insane puns and dumb jokes that can only be explained by saying “you gotta leave your brain behind”.

The movie features the return of Akshay Kumar as Sandy/Sundi, Riteish Deshmukh (Teddy), Jacqueline Fernandez (Ganga "Gracy" Patel), the ever-present Boman Irani as Batook Patel and the movie’s most indispensable character, Aakhri Pasta, portrayed by Chunkey Pandey. In the haze of slapstick and cringe-worthy scripted comedy, all of them do a fantastic job at embodying their one-dimensional characters.

The movie explores social issues, which is rejuvenating when it comes to Bollywood. Depicting them in a comical light, Housefull 3 showcases the problems of poking fun at people who have disabilities or mental health issues. Although this was appreciated, the problem lay in the method of conveying the message. The movie features pretty offensive jokes, which the audience gladly laughed at, until they realized the issues with doing so in a scene that included some smooth dialogue.

Housefull 3 also attempts to talk about issues with India’s heavy reliance on undependable astrologers, sex before marriage, rape, Westernization, human trafficking and assault. It is commendable that Farhad and Sajid included these aspects in the script and direction, however the mesh of so many social issues in a comedy gets distracting after a while.

One facet of Housefull 3 that is different to previous movies was the relieving absence of an "item song". I’m glad that Bollywood directors are beginning to realize the effect of them on the public. The movie did include some rather enjoyable songs, though. As someone who is hypercritical of Bollywood music, I give it an A, as I could actually imagine myself jamming to it. I especially enjoyed the beats of Pyar Ki, and the pastel-themed wardrobe and bhangra team with a background of Malamaal.

Overall, despite my initial criticism of small facets of the movie such as the stupidity of the female characters, the horrid almost-sex jokes, the obviousness of the green screens, the fakeness of the men’s grey beards and the overplayed slapstick, I could forgive these cinematic sins because the movie actually tried to ingrain some sense into its viewers. More progression, please.

Also, Abhishek Bachchan’s wardrobe was on point.
