There are two popular hijab styles in 2016: the traditional and the instant. Amid the growing trend for the more practical instant hijab, the traditional hijab is still the preference of the majority, said Nida Komala Putri, who sells traditional hijab at Thamrin City, on Wednesday. “This one is always popular,” she said to The Jakarta Post, pointing to a set of pastel-colored, square-shaped scarves.
The bestselling hijabs are the ones made from cerruti fabric that is similar to chiffon but higher in quality, according to Nida, who added that diamond fabric that resembles crepe but is rougher in texture is also popular.
Hijab devotees are currently into color-blocking, where they wear a different color hijab to their clothes. "As long as the tone is not too different,” Nida explained, offering a tip on hijab color-blocking. Nida also said that longer headscarfs, often referred as ‘shari hijab’, are growing in popularity.
At Nida's store, aside from a range of high-quality hijabs that sell for Rp 600,000 (US$ 45.62) or more, customers can purchase a hijab for around Rp 70,000.

Instant hijabs are a different matter. Styles considered to be in high demand are most likely celebrity-favorites. “Popular hijabs are the ones worn by local celebs like Risty Tagor, Nabila Syakieb, Dewi Sandra, Oki Setiana Dewi, Zaskia Adya Mecca, and many more,” said Yuyun Damayati, who specializes in instant hijab. She also has a store at Thamrin City.
Aside from the hijab styles worn by celebrities, the Qonita jersey (Rp 650,000) hijab, a headscarf type made with spandex that boasts a double layer, is also a popular choice among customers at Yuyun’s store. (asw)
