You’re probably already counting the days until Idul Fitri and carefully planning your Lebaran feast in intricate detail.
Amid all the hustle and bustle, you might be dreading the thought of partaking in the festivities in a thick, flowy and lackluster outfit. Ladies, fear no more.

Stay comfortable
Many designers place a strong emphasis on this. “If you carry yourself with confidence, your outfit will look really great as well,” says Khanaan, a kaftan designer.
Stick to natural fabrics such as cotton, linen and good-quality polyester so that you remain calm and cool instead of hot and heavy during the joyous occasion.
Keep it simple
Often, the simplest designs, if paired with the right accessories, make an outfit stand out from the rest with a touch of class. According to notable designer Poppy Dharsono, a well-fitting pair of trousers under a stylish tunic can be ideal, instead of overly flashy outfits with designs that clash with each other.
Khanaan recommends a specific focal point on your kaftan or tunic. Pictured is one of her designs that features a focal point of beadwork.

Know your body type
There are a number of styles you can employ on this special day, however, you have to make sure they fit not just your body type, but also your personality.
Certain outfits might have a sporty, classic, romantic, puritan, natural or androgynous feel, just to name a few. It’s best to stick to the cutting that fits your body and personal style best, to avoid striking an offbeat note with an out-of-character outfit.
Know your skin tone
Poppy mentions how our skin tone is based on three core pigments in our skin. Carotene is a yellow-orange pigment found most in Asian skin tones. Haemoglobin is a red pigment that makes your skin appear pinkish, predominantly existing in the skin of Europeans. Lastly, a higher content of melanin makes one’s skin appear darker.
Knowing which colors suit your skin tone is key to finding clothing with complementary colors.
Have fun with it!
Don’t worry about dreary traditions making you feel like you’re forced to wear a drab outfit you’d float in. This is untrue. There is a myriad of Lebaran clothing that features vibrant colors and is smooth fitting. Find an outfit that makes you feel suave, confident, and ready to enjoy the magic of Idul Fitri. (jam/kes)
